THE INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Hello girlies!!

I am WAY too excited to reveal some exciting news! I have been accepted to an internship with Bel Ami headbands. As most of you know, fashion is my ultimate passion, and I am beyond thrilled to be working with Bel Ami.

Bel Ami’s Summer Headbands 2010

Bel Ami, founded by Erin Fitzpatrick is a headband company which creates handmade hair accessories which any girl on Gossip Girl would be sporting! The pieces consist of basic black bands to rosettes, bead appliques and crystal clips; all must have hair accessories for the uber-stylish girly girl. Bel Ami’s headbands sell across Toronto, in boutiques such as “Fashion Crimes” on Queen st. Recently, Bel Ami has even taken on school headbands, creating beautiful hair accessories for students of Toronto private schools.

I will be documenting my experience through my point of view, and hopefully I can show what there is to know about first-time internships!

PART 1 – THE INTERVIEW

I had planned to meet with Erin (founder of Bel Ami) for quite some time, and I was most definitely anticipating my chance at this amazing opporotunity. I had never been interviewed for an internship before, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. However, I did bring the essentials that you should bring to any interview: a pen, my resume, starbucks (haha, just kidding about the last one)!

Erin was super sweet & asked me a few questions about myself. I was able to introduce myself and my passion for fashion, and it seemed to go well from there. I started to understand what the business was about, and it just made me all that much more excited to work there!

Next thing you know it… I was hired!

Interviews are definitely important because this is your first impression; either make it or break it – my best advice is to be prepared and to truly show who you are.
PART 2 – MY FIRST DAY!!

My first day was a great first day, where I began training. I learned how to make a base (the fabric which goes onto the headband), as well as some triple bows! I had a ton of fun – but I was quite careful becuase I was sure as NOT going to mess up! One problem of mine was always that I rushed, however this time, I made sure to take my sweet time – the product ends up much better.

That morning, I wasn’t sure what to wear! I was most likely to meet up with my mother later, and I wasn’t sure what I would be doing within my first day – who knew, maybe I would have to get coffee, or something like that. So, I tried my best to look presentable; but not too uptight! The atmosphere I’m in mostly revolves around the studio, so it is important to make sure you are comfortable (this way it’s easier to craft head pieces). Also, it was super hot that day – so, I opted for a grey summer dress, and decided to dress it up with some large crystal necklaces and bracelets – in pretty greens & pinks! To complete the look – I added my satin black bow headband by Bel Ami!
